What’s 5G and how will we use it?

The evolution of communication technologies has gone as fast as our needs, and sometimes even faster; we were only scratching the surface with 4G on our smartphones when suddenly the arrival of 5G was announced.

5g

No one complains of the speed with which we browse thanks to 4G, however many users never quite grasped the difference between 3 and 4 or 4.5G, since basically every change on the network usually comes with an upgrade on smartphones and many believe the connection speed and processing capabilities have more to do with the smartphone than the network technologies, but this time specialists call the new network a “revolution”, this is why the arrival of 5G feels more important.

The network of IoT

Networks have been evolving in a relatively accelerated way, by half of 1980 we had already seen the birth of 1G; an analog network that could only transmit voice data. A decade later came the birth of 2G, which allowed us to send text messages, images and was the first digital network. Soon after, 3G was born allowing video calls and mobile data. Finally, only 5 years ago we saw 4G, which allows us to fo video streaming, mobile internet, HD downloads, gaming, etc.

Up to now, what the different telecom networks have offered us is broader coverage and better connection and browsing speed; 5G will offer all of this upgraded plus the possibility of giving full connectivity to smart devices, this is why it was baptized “the Internet of Things network” allowing many different devices to be online with less latency, which is the time it takes for a device to receive a signal and execute an order or show a result.

How will we use it?

Everyday life apps will vary a lot, from downloading movies in High Definition in less than 10 seconds, to having smart kitchen appliances, self-driving cars that are safer and trustworthy, ads projected in real time on car windows (thanks to geotagging) and will open the possibility for surgeons to perform operations a thousand kilometers away thanks to 5G’s bandwidth.

As marketers and users, to us this means that we will have a lower loading time on pages and ads, documents and movies, fully immersing on Machine Learning, which means a more personal browsing experience, more accurate recommendations, better user experience, since our shopping habits will not only be registered but also analyzes and used to make our lives simpler.
