How much time do we spend on social media?

time on social media

It’s not surprising that the use of social media keeps on increasing over the years. Practically, we could say that we know about the world not through experience, but through what we see on our screens.

It’s so common to see so many people stuck to their cellphone screens that several countries have implemented signs on the floor for cellphone users to avoid accidents.

We know that we pass a lot of time staring at our screens, but it’s also important to know which platforms we use, why we use them, and how long we spend on them. The team at Famemass revealed new statistical data about the relationship between social media and its users.

Time: Currently, on average people spend between 2 hours and 23 minutes per day on social media. 3.48 billion people (approximately half of the world’s population) use social media.

Platforms: The average time spent on Facebook is 58 minutes; on Instagram, 53 minutes; on YouTube, 40 minutes; on Snapchat, 35 minutes; and on Twitter, 3 minutes.

Regions: The Asia-Pacific region spends an average of 2 hours and 22 minutes on social media. In Europe, 1 hour and 57 minutes are spent on social media. In Latin America, 3 hours and 32 minutes are spent on social media. In the Middle East, 3 hours and 12 minutes are spent on social media, while North America spends 1 hour and 56 minutes on social media.

Countries: The top 4 countries that spend most time on social media are: the Philippines with an average of 4 hours and 1 minute spent on social media, followed by Brazil with 3 hours and 45 minutes, then Colombia with 3 hours and 36 minutes, Nigeria similarly with an average of 3 hours and 36 minutes, and last but not least Argentina with 3 hours and 27 minutes.

Last but not least, we see user’s motives for using social media platforms.

40% of people use social media to find out about the most relevant news and events.

39% of people say they use social media to stay in touch and keep up with friends.

38% of people say they use social media for fun and entertainment.

37% of people say they use social media because they have nothing else to do.

33% of people say they use social media as a networking source.

32% of people say they use social media to share pictures and video.

31% of people say they use social media to find products that they want to purchase.

And 30% of people say they use social media because their friends use it.

What we can conclude from this data is that social media is still on the rise. Another important point to consider is that people use social media as their preferred source for information. The days of the newspaper are long gone, and instead, social media has become an essential part of our lives.
