Instagram gets more locks

For the last couple of months, social networks have been updating on their data safety issues and services in pro of their millions of users, and Instagram, being one of the top 10 downloaded apps worldwide, couldn’t possibly stay behind. Recently the word began to spread about different scams in social media, be it stolen accounts or data; even though this isn’t something new, they have called for the attention after the not-so-recent event regarding the sale of personal data to different companies. To escape the negative spotlight, Instagram has been renovated with three new safety tools for users.

“About this Account”

Just like Facebook gives us the option to see everything that happens behind cameras of our favorite fanpage, Instagram joins the motion and brings us the option “About this Account” where we can find: the date the account was created, the country it belongs to, if they have any ads active at the moment and, very importantly, to know of previous usernames since its creation, which is to say we can now know for certain if whoever is managing the account now stole the followers, reputation and positioning in a less than polite way.

A new element that helps create closer networks is the “Accounts with Shared Followers” tab, a step that helps us know what other accounts are followed by the users we are analyzing.

Account Verification

To get verification on the accounts we manage things are now simpler, now all it takes is to go into our profile and ask the verification of an account, upload an official ID for our business and the full username. Once this steps are done, the IT department of Instagram will send us a message to let us know if the verification was done correctly or not.

Authentication with third party apps

Instagram will give us the chance to choose a third party app to log in, and if we do choose to, the network will generate a code so we can have quick and easy access, this way the app makes sure that whoever is trying to enter the account is who they really claim to be. The advantage of this new way to log in to Instagram is that we can stop worrying about somebody trying to hijack our profile even if they decipher our password.

It’s natural that social networks look for a way to keep their user base, since many have lost the trust they once had on social media and it could mean trouble for the ones who use them as a way to connect with fans since you cannot know if they really are talking to their favorite brand o with whoever has stolen their account.

If there’s something every brand should take care of is their reputation in social media, which makes it all that important to take the tools Instagram is providing us and using them in our favor.
