Storytelling: using the user’s story to engage

Storytelling

Close your eyes, right now, remember the last thing ad you saw in a movie theater. What made you remember it? There’s a 20 in my pocket that says it was the story. Maybe you remember the brand, maybe even the product, but I am certain beyond doubt that what you remember the most is laughter or sadness, or maybe nostalgia, whatever it was it moved your heart. This is the root behind visual storytelling.

In resume, visual storytelling isn’t more than a big story teller that works for the brand. The next examples lead the way.

Volkswagen and the dark side

You probably remember this amazing ad. A boy plays as Darth Vader and using the Force. This fun ad by Volkswagen in partnership with Star Wars says loud and clear that for the brand, the most important thing is family. The child’s innocence and the tenderness moved in our hearts by his imagination warmed our souls and stayed with us forever.

Dove: the search for real beauty

Another great example is Dove. Real Beauty has had great success with the consumers and general public. The video poses various women in front of a sketch artist. First, they describe themselves to him and then they describe another one of the participants. The video tells us the truth about what the image we have of ourselves versus the image everyone else has of us. A classic tale of self esteem, told form a new angle.

BMW: taking storytelling to the limit

Humans love to tell and hear stories. Be it to satisfy their curiosity, gossip or pure entertainment needs, we try to get as many stories as we can. Sometimes, this stories tell adventures. This is the case of the short films produced by BMW, directed by artists like Guy Ritchie and John Woo, they give us Clive Owen as the hero of the movie driving a BMW car, doing drift stunts and whatnot, running away from villains in high speed chases to get to his ultimate destiny safe.

Visual narrative has become a basic part of today’s marketing and can add a lot to our brand. The main idea is that the customer has to make a connection between the brand and a feeling to keep forever. To tie the knot on everything I just discussed, we need to remember to present the user with a great experience, a subject we are also talking about here. By joining storytelling with user experience we can make a gran marketing plan that will make an amazing brand experience that the user won’t forget for a long time.
